Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What does my child need to bring?
A: We recommend that all participants wear sunblock, a hat/cap, polarized sunglasses, and loose fitting, light colored clothing. All fishing equipment and materials are provided. Use of motion sickness medication is at parents’ discretion. Captains, crew, or staff of The Fishing Experience will not administer these or any other medications. DO NOT send your child with video games, iPods, or electronic entertainment devices. Cell phones are allowed, but only to be used for communication with parents. The Fishing Experience and participating vessels are not responsible for lost/damaged phones.
Q: Do the kids get to keep the fish?
A: Yes. A portion of each day’s catch of each vessel will be shared among the participants aboard that vessel. The fish will be cleaned, bagged, and iced by the crew. We recommend carrying a small cooler to pick-up each day. The quantity, at the captain’s discretion, should be enough for a meal for a family of four. The remainder of the catch will remain with the crew.
Q: Can I get pictures of the kids with their fish?
A: Yes. The crew will take pictures/video throughout the day. These will be made available to you at the end of the week. You are also welcome to meet the boat at the dock and take pictures of the fish that are brought in. Bear in mind, some fish will be cleaned after a short time, so try to be at the dock when the boat arrives.
Q: What happens if the weather is bad?
A: Summertime usually means favorable weather. However, if, in the opinion of camp staff, the seas are too rough to go offshore, vessels will fish in the protected waters of Biscayne Bay. In the event of severe weather (thunderstorms, extreme winds, widespread heavy rain), the day may be canceled without refund or make-up. In the event that more than one day is canceled during a session, participants will be offered a make-up day or a refund @ $50/day. Make-up days are subject to schedule availability. Cancellations due to named tropical systems will be refunded a prorated amount based on the lost days or a full refund if the entire session is canceled.
Q: Do I have to provide lunch for my child?
You can choose the lunch option for $25 during registration, which includes a footlong sandwich each day from Subway plus a bag of chips. Bottled water is always provided at no charge. Or, if you’d prefer, you can send a bag lunch, in which case we ask that you do not send candy, sodas, or sugary snacks. Also, please do not send peanut butter sandwiches, as we occasionally get participants with peanut allergies.
